How Much To Tip A Mover?

When I hired a moving company for the first time I really had no clue how much (and if at all) I should tip them.

So I pretty much made a fool out of myself and offended the people that did a really good job and I was very happy with their service…

Maybe that is because I’m originally from Europe and people over there are not really avid tippers (in fact, they can be quiet stingy when it comes to tipping).

So, I paid the moving company $700 and tipped them $40 - I thought that this was a good tip. At least until I saw the reaction of the foreman. He didn’t complain, but his face gave it all away when he thanked me.

Fortunately I’m quiet happy in the US (it’s really a great nation and even though I’m from Europe I now consider myself a proud American) and finally got adjusted more with the American ways.

That means I’m now also more tipping-literate.

So, how much to tip a mover? It should be 15%-20% of the overall moving costs. If your gratuity is less than you either make a statement that you are not satisfied with their services or that you are just plain stingy. And if you pay more the guys will of course be very happy about that.

However, if the service is really bad, you don’t have to tip them at all. Nobody can force you to tip, but it’s considered fair game to do so.
